How Long Should Automatic Irrigation Run? Measure Your Garden Instead of Guessing Minutes

Otomatik Sulama Kaç Dakika Çalışmalı? Dakika Ezberlemek Yerine Bahçede Süreyi Ölçme

There is no universal '20-minute' irrigation rule. Different sprinkler types apply different amounts of water, while slope, compaction and soil texture determine how quickly the ground can absorb it.

There is no universal '20-minute' irrigation rule. Different sprinkler types apply different amounts of water, while slope, compaction and soil texture determine how quickly the ground can absorb it. Measure application and root-zone moisture instead of copying a timer setting.

Think about the water applied, not the minutes

Run time alone is not meaningful. In a sprinkler zone, set small containers at even spacing and see how much water they collect in a set time; that shows what your system actually applies.

Check the root zone

After watering, check the root depth, not only the soil surface. The aim is water reaching the active roots, not a wet pavement.

If runoff starts, split the time

On a slope or compacted ground, one long cycle can send water off the surface. Cycle-and-soak splits the same total time with pauses and gives the water time to soak in.

Why are the early morning hours an advantage?

In cooler hours with less wind, evaporation and drift can drop. Avoiding late programs that leave the leaves wet all night also helps reduce some disease risks.

Zones should not all run for the same time

Keep turf where it has a functional role and where light, access and irrigation can support it. Narrow, steep or heavily shaded strips often deserve a different surface or planting strategy.

Do not forget the controller after rain

Without a rain sensor or a smart controller, the same program all season can use water for no reason. Review it against temperature, rainfall and the plant’s growth stage.

A walk around the site once a month

A broken head, a clogged emitter, a spray pointed the wrong way and a pressure problem make a well-built program meaningless. Watching the system while it runs is one of the cheapest maintenance methods.

A field-first rule

Before changing the whole garden, test the assumption in a small area and document the result. Landscape problems are often site-specific; a measured observation is more valuable than a universal minute, dose or plant list.
